Freezing — where the picture locks on a single frame, sometimes with audio still playing — is a slightly different problem from ordinary buffering, and it's worth treating separately.

Freezing vs buffering

Buffering usually shows a loading indicator while playback pauses to catch up. Freezing often locks visually without an obvious loading indicator, and can sometimes continue playing audio while the picture stays still. Common causes of freezing

• A brief but complete drop in your internet connection
• Device performance struggling to keep up, especially on older hardware
• A temporary glitch in the app itself
• Too many background apps competing for device resources

Fixes to try

1. Restart the app fully
2. Close other apps running in the background on the same device
3. Restart the device itself
4. Switch to a wired Ethernet connection if your device supports it

If it only happens on one older device

If freezing only shows up on one specific device — especially an older phone, tablet, or streaming box — while other devices on the same network play smoothly, device performance is the more likely explanation rather than your connection. Older hardware can struggle to decode higher-quality video consistently, particularly if several apps are competing for the same limited memory. Closing background apps and avoiding the very highest quality setting can help in these cases.
